Have you ever had a setback in your career?

If the answer is YES, you are not alone.

90% of people have experienced at least 1 career setback, 60% of people have experienced 2 career setbacks, 40% of people have experienced 3 career setbacks, 25% of people have experienced 4 career setbacks, and 15
% of people have experienced 5 or more career setbacks in their lifetime.
(Source: Indeed, the #1 job site in the world.)

These are big numbers, but they are recoverable.

75% of individuals overcome these setbacks successfully, finding new opportunities and progressing nicely in their careers.

HOW? They don't overcome their setbacks alone.

Career Setbacks are tough to go through, but they don't have to define your career. It's not what has happened that matters most, it's the action steps you take from here.

WHAT IS A CAREER SETBACK?

Picture
A career setback is an obstacle or series of challenges that impede professional growth and advancement, leading to a decline in your career momentum.

These setbacks arise from various sources, such as skill obsolescence, lack of promotion opportunities, poor leadership, unclear career paths, office politics, frequent organizational changes, job insecurity, insufficient professional development, micromanagement, industry decline, skill mismatches, reputation damage, lack of networking, resistance to change, inadequate performance reviews, economic recessions, and health issues.

These factors hinder your ability to perform effectively, achieve goals, and progress in your career, necessitating strategic action to overcome and mitigate their impact to you.

Are career setbacks REALLY a PROBLEM?

YES...Because.... your past is hurting your present and future professional success.

As a result... you will find yourself in situations in your career that make you feel bad about yourself, no longer in your best interests, or aligned with who you are today or who you want to be tomorrow. You have been thrown off course. You believe your choices are limited. You have lost your power, perspective, yourself, and your way forward.

For example:
  • You are in the wrong job.
  • You are working for the wrong company.
  • You are not advancing in your career.
  • You are in a career or job you have no passion for.

You are:
  • Feeling regretful, sad, guilty, fearful, shameful, or embarrassed.
  • Viewing yourself negatively, having a hard time forgiving yourself/others for what happened, and your self-confidence is low.
  • Aware you need to move on.
  • Unable to move past your setback on your own.

It's like you have a dark cloud hanging over your head.

how does NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD hurt your career?
it can significantly impact your career in several ways:

Picture
1) Emotional & Mental Health: Career setbacks cause stress, anxiety, and a never-ending longingness for more. This affects your focus, productivity, earnings potential, and overall job performance.

2) Self-Confidence:
Career setbacks undermine your self-esteem and confidence. This results in self-doubt, fear of failure, and reluctance to take on new challenges or leadership roles, leaving you under-paid or under-utilized.

3) Interpersonal Relationships:
Career setbacks influence how you interact with colleagues, supervisors, and clients. You may struggle with communication or conflict resolution in the workplace.

4) Career Advancement: If career setbacks have affected your education or skill development, you might find it challenging to advance or to compete in your field. This can lead to a feeling of powerlessness and being stuck.

5) Motivation & Drive: Career setbacks can sap your motivation and enthusiasm for your work. You might find it hard to set goals, stay committed, or push through challenges. This means your career stays the same.

6) Reputation & Professional Relationships: If career setbacks have led to negative interactions or conflicts in previous jobs, they will follow you, affecting your reputation and the willingness of others to work with you. You will feel ostracized.

it is time to break free + REBUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE.

About deborah, your coach & community leader.

Picture
For 20+ years, I have been on forefront of the coaching industry and am known as the go-to resource for goal achievement.

I am a Certified Career Coach and Career Goals Advisor to Fortune 500 Companies. I have helped my clients through some of the toughest moments in their careers by empowering them to find new jobs, new careers, and new ways to overcome challenges in the workplace.

I have worked with clients in Fortune 500 companies, including: Facebook, Google, Citibank, Nautica, Verizon, and many others.

I am a childhood trauma survivor who experienced many setback in my career and life. I have successfully left them behind me.

I learned the art of getting back up after rebuilding my career and myself because remnants of a tough upbringing were holding me back.

I had to dig deep. I had to look within. I discovered my gift of resilience, persistence, and never giving up. My goal is to share that gift with you.

Despite my chaotic past and setbacks, I was the first person in my family to earn a college degree and use my education to secure a high-paying job in New York City.

I also:
  • Built and grew a global career coaching practice that I have had for 20+ years.
  • Was a pioneer and early educator in the coaching industry.
  • Rose to Director of Operations (seat at the table role) for a socially conscious start-up.
  • Published 7 how-to career and business books.
  • Received 70+ certifications from learning and coursework.
  • Became a social media influencer at the age 56.
  • Was elected four times to be the President of the Moriches Rotary Club.
  • Became co-owner of Sunday Records, a vinyl record store.
  • Bought a home. Then, bought two more homes; one in another state and one in another county.
  • Created something I never had as a child; a safe and loving home.

Important Note: I am not a therapist. I am a career coach and regular person who went through a horrible beginning, survived, experienced setbacks in her career/life, healed her past, and has successfully moved forward.

A few extra details about my background...

I write how-to career books and am a 7-time published author. My last 2 books share my story of how I overcame my past (including big setbacks in the workplace) combined with strategies to overcome yours.

Childhood Trauma. Some rise; some fall. How to be one of the lucky ones that get back up.

It's Time To Rise! Overcoming Childhood Trauma. (Part 2: The Workbook)

AUTHOR"S NOTE: I started with one book on this topic, then wrote the second book, and then created this community.  I has NO IDEA I would be creating these resources 6 month ago. I went in the direction that life was taking me and I ended up here.

WHY I CREATED THIS COMMUNITY.

Picture
Have you ever been in a group of people and still felt alone? I have. I felt that way all the time. Especially in the workplace.

I realized that my feelings of sadness, loneliness, and disconnection were not a result of the workplace, but who I was inside. I was empty.

I had felt this way my whole life. I grew up with a parents who were into themselves. They weren’t very into me. They weren't nice to me either. I had to pretend I didn’t like them or care because of how hurt I was, even though I did.

I couldn’t let them in. I had to harden my heart. It was for my own self-protection. Unfortunately, that’s how I learned to relate to people. It’s hard to turn something off that is so ingrained in you.

I have found moments of deep connection. They have been through groups of shared interests. People who got me. I got them too.

That’s why I created this community. There was a place I wanted to go in my career that I was could not reach because my yesterday was hurting my today. I know how painful that can be.

While I was in the midst of my struggles, I said to myself, "I will not let my past define me anymore. I deserve more and I want something else. I will move past my beginning and make my ending stronger. I will rise and find others who want to rise too."  That is how my purpose was born.

Clarity comes to you as you go. It unfolds when you keep going.
