JAN-JUNE 2002 E-WEEKLY TIPS
2001 E-WEEKLY TIPS

Do you remember what you said you wanted to be when you grew up? A doctor? A fireman? An astronaut? Or, did you want to grow up and find a career without purpose or meaning?

I bet you wanted to grow up and make a difference in the world. And, do something great with your career. You may have looked at your parents and promised yourself that your career would be different than theirs. But then life got in the way, and you talked yourself into believing that this is the best you can do.

THE WEEKLY ACTION CHALLENGE

This week get a small tape recorder and tape yourself discussing your career with two different people. (Get their permission first!)

Your challenge is to listen to yourself. What did you hear? Did you hear yourself saying that finding a job is hopeless? Could this be why you can't find one? Or, did you hear yourself saying that you cannot switch careers in this market, you don't have enough experience for the job you really want, are overqualified, too old, too young, etc? Notice how your words make this true. Or, did you hear yourself say that you cannot ask for additional resources at work, a raise, a promotion, time off, etc? Has this become your reality?

Awareness is the first step to career transformation. Recognizing what you are saying when you speak can give you the insight and knowledge you need to change it. Your career might not be perfect at the moment (the truth is most of us are struggling in our careers), but it can get better the moment you say it will.

So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be a life you love!

HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
