MONDAY
MORNING ACTION TIP #222 |
Opening Note: At SurpassYourDreams.com, July is live your dreams month. And to celebrate, this month’s tips will be about identifying and obtaining your dream career.
Below is an excerpt from my book, Coach Yourself To A New Career, my first book on how to obtain your ideal profession:
When I was in the corporate world, I was a frequent job switcher. People in my life kept asking me, “What’s wrong with you?” Additional questions such as, “Why can’t you be happy?” and “Why can’t you stay in one job for an extended period of time?” plagued me. I started each job with good intentions, telling myself, “This is it. I’m staying here forever.” But a month or two later, I would start feeling unhappy again.
I remember burying my head in my hands and asking the universe for a way out. I got my answer three months later when I took a Learning Annex class on How To Become A Coach. During this class, I knew I had found my purpose. I had always wanted to motivate people but never thought I could make a living at it. The class was so compelling that my next career move made sense to me. Even though I was heading toward the unknown, I was ready to jump in. I signed up for coach training at Coach U and, in August 1998, opened my part-time coaching practice. For three and a half years, I coached clients in the evenings and on weekends while holding a full-time job. Then, in July 2001, I made the final break from the corporate world and set up my practice full time. I have been on a challenging and adventurous ride ever since. I have never been more content.
The interesting thing is that I don’t think about switching jobs anymore. I love what I do, and can’t imagine doing anything else. As for the skills I learned while job-hoppingū resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, networking, and salary negotiations -- they have become coaching services I offer to my clients. Funny how things turn out.
THE WEEKLY ACTION CHALLENGE
Your challenge this week is to find your purpose. Ask yourself what you enjoy doing naturally or what your hobbies are. Your interests hold the key to what you are meant to do with your life.
Keep asking, “What am I supposed to do with my life?” If you are willing to listen, the answer will come.
So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be a life you love!
