I. DO YOU FEEL UNDERSTOOD?

If not, could it be because you are not connecting with the people around you?

Understanding between two people is amazing. When you “Get” the person you are speaking with and they “Get” you, the chemistry is magical. And since “Understanding” is what so many clients tell me they want, then why is understanding so hard to obtain?

The truth is we are busy. We are stressed and only half listening most of the time. (If that much at all.) We have trained ourselves to read between the lines and answer questions before they are asked. This makes us efficient and proud that we can do a lot in a small amount of time. But our “efficiency” can leave the other person feeling empty because a real connection was not made.

Think about your relationships at work. Which ones are successful? The ones you spend time on, understanding where the other person is coming from or the ones you spend little time on and demand perfection? If you are looking for a job, which headhunters do you prefer working with? The ones who spend time with you, asking good questions about what you want, or those who don’t let you finish your sentence?

The next time you are frustrated with someone, put yourself in their shoes. Ask yourself, “What are they going through?” “Am I being understanding or judgmental?” “How can I help?”

If you want to get understanding, give it first. You will be amazed by how much more satisfying and productive your interactions will be.

So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be a life you love!

II. TOP SIX THINGS YOU CAN DO TO FOSTER UNDERSTANDING

1. Make Time.

Take uninterrupted, focused time to communicate until you're sure you understand and sure you’re understood.

2. Listen Actively.

Be open to what is said without judgment; paraphrase to show that you understand the other person.

3. Show Empathy.

Appreciate what others experience as they convey their thoughts.

4. Be Generous.

Believe the best about others' intentions and act with good, transparent intentions yourself.

5. Be Patient.

Accept that sometimes people need to "work through" their thoughts to discover what they mean as they say it. Let them go through this process without interrupting.

6. Stick With It.

Make the commitment to build understanding and keep working on improving your skills until you do.
