Are you frustrated
because you have goals but have no time to pursue them? Or, when you plan to
spend a few hours working on your goals, does something get in the way to
distract you?
Well, you are not alone.
If you are like most of us, you wish you had more hours in the day to get
everything done. We make time for the goals
that are important to us. So, if you are honest with yourself, you will accept
that your unrealized goals are the goals that you may not truly want, or are not
ready for yet. Maybe your goal overwhelmed you. Or, you got scared. Maybe you
stopped because you had a question, but you didn't know where to go for the
answer. Whatever the reason, you hesitated, and in your moment of hesitation,
you realized it was because you said "I don't have time for this now."
Time is a choice, and if you
choose to put in the time, you will reach your goal. To make your goal
achievable, take your larger goal and break it into smaller pieces. Then, put
the smaller pieces into your calendar so you know specifically what you have to
do when. Having a calendar (and using it) makes a tremendous difference when you
are implementing your goal. It holds you accountable, especially during those
moments when you don't feel like working on your goal. Accountability gives you
access to the time you thought you did not have.
Some people get challenged
when searching for the time on their calendars for the smaller pieces.
Realistically, we never get large blocks of time to do anything, but we do get
15 minutes here, 1/2 hour there such as when we are waiting in line, commuting
to work, at a doctor's appointment, etc. The goal is to use your 15 minutes
effectively. 15 minutes over the span of 30 days means you spent 7 1/2 hours
working towards your goal. Not bad for a small amount of work. Make time for your goals,
and you will reach them! I am not saying that you won't have to change a few
things or clear out some of the obstacles that are standing in your way. I am
saying that the satisfaction that comes from goal achievement will make your
effort worthwhile.
So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be
a life you love!

II. TOP WAYS TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGE YOUR TIME
1. Shift From Not Valuing To Valuing Your Time.
This is an important change to make, and when it happens you will be more
careful with your time. In life, we only get one chance with our time - we
cannot go back and get the last 10 seconds.
2. Get The Most Out Of Your Day.
Every now and then ask yourself: Am I making the best use of my time? If not,
stop what you are doing and begin working on a project that will allow you
better use of your time. If you are bogged down, get up and go for a walk and
then come back and tackle it.
3. Work With Goals In Mind.
It's amazing how differently we work when we have goals to work towards. If you
don't know what your goals are, spend some time working out what they may be.
Use them as a road map. Examples may be professional (project deadline, sales
quotas, career advancement, etc.) and personal (health, fitness, family
relationship, financial, etc.)
4. Handle Every Piece Of Paper Or E-Mail Only Once.
With paper use the '3 D' rule of Do it, Dump it or Delegate it. Never handle a
piece of paper twice. Don't even think of placing it in your 'to get to' pile -
Handle it NOW. As for e-mails the same rule can apply so you either action it,
delete it or forward it to someone else. If you print a copy then also use the
'3 D' rule. <
5. Ask Someone Who Is Efficient - What's Their Secret?
Ask the most efficient person you know what their secret is and how did they
develop these habits. Then, see if it will work for you.
6. Don't Allow Anyone To Take Your Time From You.
Set up boundaries around your time. If you are stopped in the hall for a
conversation, ask for this person to arrange a meeting with you (if
appropriate); don't allow co-workers to infringe on your home time; if someone
is late for an appointment and hasn't contacted you -give them 15 minutes past
the appointed time and then move on. It is up to you how you allow other people
to use your time.
7.
Build Family And Personal Time Into Your Day.
We all need to have the support of our family or friends - so make sure you
build them into your daily habits. You don't want to finish your career and
realize that you missed out on the closeness and development of your family and
friends. Maintain your health and fitness because this is what will help you in the long
run. At the end of the day being overworked and stressed is only going to hamper
your health. So take extra care of this - go for a walk, have a massage, spend
time with your family, stop and smell the roses or book a yearly medical check
up. Take some time to remove the clutter from your office. The more you simplify
your office, the more time you will have. Clutter zaps your energy and allows
you to waste time on non-valuable tasks. Schedule demanding tasks for the part of the day that you work best; where your
energy levels are at their highest. It may be first thing in the morning or
early afternoon - determine your peak time and then see yourself moving ahead.

THIS MONTH: COMMON MISTAKES WHEN BUILDING A COACHING PRACTICE
How are you spending your time
as you build your coaching practice? Here is what one coach had to say about
building her practice.
1. I wish I enjoyed my
practice more when it was new and I had time to interact with people. When your
schedule is tight you'll have to be more businesslike. 2. I wish I didn't let
negative people turn me off or discourage me from my chosen path in life.
Recognize negative comments as interest and get them into dialogue with you.
Half the time they become your greatest fans. Don't ask me why this magical
formula works, but it does. 3. I wish I had learned how
to offload negative energy. Try washing your hands after interacting with a
difficult person or take a shower. Use your imagination. It works! 4. I wish I hadn't put too
much time and money into the trappings. You are the business. Invest in
yourself. 5. I wish I could have
networked with other coaches more often. You'd be surprised how much time it
saves to compare notes. No need to reinvent the wheel. 6. I wish I had shopped for
cheaper phone rates. You can make a fun project of this one night when there's
nothing else to do. 7. I wish I didn't hold
back. Give, give, give. Give it away. It all comes back to you. 8. I wish I didn't have
judgments about clients and potential clients. Learn this great truth. Your
clients choose you. It's not the other way around. 9. I wish I accepted that I
would be occasionally intimidated by people's titles and obvious success. Tell
them upfront you're a little intimidated. They'll help you get over it!
10. I wish I didn't think I
