I. ARE YOU CHOOSING YOUR RESOLUTIONS OR ARE THEY CHOOSING YOU?

Ok, it's one year later and it's time to look back on the resolutions you made last year. How did you do? Did you stick to your resolutions or did you forget them after a few weeks?

Many of us did not do what we said we would do at the beginning of 2003. So, why do we keep making these promises to ourselves year after year when we know in our hearts that we will not carry them out?

New Years Resolutions show us that we yearn for a fresh start. This is our opportunity for a clean slate and a chance to try again. In theory, it is a great idea. But when we make resolutions for the wrong reasons, they usually don't turn out well.

Why? Because we are not choosing our resolutions, our resolutions are choosing us. This happens when we make resolutions for any reason other than because we want to.

Think about it. If you spend most of your energy on work, and you think you SHOULD focus more on your life after work, resolving to bring balance into your day will not happen. If you are unhappy in your job and you think you SHOULD do something else, you will not until you want to in your heart. (No matter how much you complain.) If you think you SHOULD be starting your own business but you know that you are not ready, your resolution to work for yourself will fail. (Even if you have the best business idea in the world.)

This year, choose your resolutions because you WANT TO, not because you SHOULD. "I want to" will carry you through the hard times when it seems like your resolutions might not come true. It will also give you the strength to make your resolutions a reality. "I Want To" is the key to your success.

So what will next year at this time look like? Whatever you choose, do it for the right reasons, and that reason is doing it for you. Good luck!

COACH YOURSELF TO A NEW CAREER

I just published a new book that can help you discover your ultimate career. It's a combination of what I have learned to find my dream career combined with real life examples of those individuals who have found theirs. The book is extremely interactive and it helps you find your answers from within. The book was a big goal for me in 2003 and I am glad to say that I did it!

Here's What's Inside The Book:

* How to locate your dream career

* How to find inner clarity and direction

* How fear can be used to your advantage

* How to create an action plan that gets results

* How to obtain your ultimate profession

While most career books concentrate on the logistics of finding the perfect career, this book focuses on uncovering what you were meant to do with your career from you. I hope you enjoy it.

II. SEVEN THINGS TO GIVE THIS YEAR BECAUSE YOU WANT TO

Since January is a great time to set goals, here are some things you may consider adding to your list to start the new year off right. Simple things that would make a huge impact on the people around you. But do so, only if you want to.

1. Your Time.

How many of you have become so busy with your own lives, that there is less time for others? How many of you want this to change? The people in your life need and love you. Make time for them. You never know what miracles they can bring into your life.

2. Your Support.

How many of you support the people in your life? What I mean by support is encouragement to try something new. Just because it did not work for you does not mean it will not work for them. And, just because it did not work for them in the past, does not mean that it will not work in the future. There is nothing better than telling a person that they can do whatever they want with their lives. They will never forget your encouraging words.

3. Your Acceptance.

Are you giving your unconditional love and acknowledgement for who the people in your life are versus where you think they should be? Why not let go of your opinions and judgments and replace them with admiration for what the other person is going through and trying to accomplish? Sure they may make some mistakes that you wish they could avoid, but at least the lessons will be theirs to keep and cherish versus something you forced on them.

4. Your Attention.

How many of you can say you really listen? For everyone who just said, "of course I do", then why are the people in your life asking you to repeat what they just said? Is it because they know you did not hear them? Can you stop what you are doing, and focus on what they are saying? Who knows, you may even learn something you thought you already knew.

5. Your Forgiveness.

Why not forgive people for past mistakes and hurts? After all, they are only human. (We miss this sometimes!) Plus, have you been the model human being? Forgiveness is an amazing gift you can give another person. They will remember your kindness.

Note: Yes you can write to me to tell me all the reasons why you do not have to forgive the people who have hurt you. But think about this: who are you hurting more with your anger, them or you?

6. Your Patience.

How many of you cannot even sit still when you are around the people you love because they are taking too long to tell a story or longer than "you think" to complete a project. How do you know there is not a better way to do something? Having patience with people shows them that they are respected and loved. Isn't this a better way to have a relationship?

7. Your Love.

People want to know they are special in your life and you care about them. If there are conversations you need to have so you are not angry with them anymore, but you are afraid, my advice is to have them anyway. Sometimes you have to take a risk to achieve an open and rewarding relationship. Take the risk and give your love.

THIS MONTH: BOUNCE BACK FROM ADVERSITY

As coaches, sometimes it's not just our clients that need to bounce back from adversity. Sometimes it us too. Adversity makes us better coaches. What we learn to handle, we then teach to our clients. Here are some tips to get through adversity as quick as possible.

1. Adversity is temporary.

2. You need it so you could learn a valuable lesson.

3. You need it to be softened by life.

4. You need it to give your life more integrity or character.

5. You need it so you could be an example for others.

6. You need it to rid yourself of some arrogance or ignorance.

7. You need it to grow in some area of your life.

8. You need it so you could learn to laugh at yourself.

9. You need it so you can learn to live in the present.

10. You need it so you can learn to take life less seriously. Hang on to your dreams of growing your coaching practice. And, don't let others convince you that you can't do it, won't do it, or shouldn't do it. Be true to yourself and your destiny. You have everything you need, right now.
