I. OBSTACLES OR OPPORTUNITIES?

Are you facing an obstacle in your career that you would like to overcome? Do you consider it a problem or an opportunity?

Many people are facing a tough time in their careers. The uncertainly is the toughest part. "Will I get a new job?" "Will I be fired from the one I have?" These are valid questions.

What if your obstacle is a good thing? Maybe your obstacle has been around for so long because it's not supposed to go away. Maybe it won't disappear until you change the way you think about it.

How you view your obstacle can determine whether you will find a solution and how long it will take to find it. You can mull over how you've been cheated, hurt, disappointed, etc. or you can focus on positive aspects of your situation and move on.

Think about Christopher Reeve, who became a paraplegic in a tragic accident while he was horse riding. Is he sitting in his room feeling sorry for himself because he is paralyzed? No. He is working to help other people who are also in his situation. If you asked him if he is unhappy, he would probably tell you no. He is fulfilled in ways he never imagined possible because he is making a difference in so many people's lives.

How can you turn your obstacle into opportunity? It's up to you to decide and make it happen.

So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be a life you love!

II. TOP WAYS TO KNOCK OUT OBSTACLES

1. Realize That What May Be An Obstacle For One Person May Be No Big Deal For Another Person, And Vice Versa.

Ask yourself, is this issue really an obstacle, or am I just choosing to look at it that way.

2. Look At ALL Your Resources, Opportunities, And Alternatives.

Don't forget to look at how others you know may help you. Enlist their support.

3. Take A Step Back.

Remain cool and objective. If fear or intimidation is part of the obstacle, ask yourself, what is the worst that can happen if I approach this task.

4. Think About What You Would Tell A Friend If They Were Faced With The Same Issue.

Sometimes it can be easier to tell someone else how to approach an obstacle and get around it. Act as your own friend.

5. Jump Forward, Then Back.

Think about or envision having achieved your desired end result. Now work backwards to determine what you will need to do to achieve that result. (Who knew that hindsight could be so much fun...)

6. Ask For It!

Try asking directly for what you want. Sometimes asking can cut through what was previously perceived as a stone wall.

7. Determine How Else You Can Do It.

What other ways are there to transact business so that you can get to what you want? Barter; give something away; talk about what *you* can bring to the table. Be creative -- until the advent of leasing, driving a new car was an obstacle for many!

8. Use Artful Persuasion.

Make a good argument for why it's of mutual benefit to the other party to lower or remove the obstacle standing in the way. If given the rationale, people usually would rather please others than not.

9. Break Down The Obstacle Into Smaller, More Manageable Components.

We never eat a meal in one big bite (now that would be an obstacle!). Break it down, down, down.

10. Muster Determination!

By doing this, you will gain the energy and momentum needed to knock down what gets in your way.

III. COACHES CORNER

Since many of my newsletter subscribers are coaches, this section is for you. It contains tips and techniques to take your coaching practice to the next level.

TOP LESSONS LEARNED FROM A SUCCESSFUL COACH

Is growing your coaching practice an obstacle or an opportunity? See below lessons learned from a coach who turned her dream of being a coach, obstacles and all, into a successful and profitable coaching entity.

One of the rewards of BEING a coach comes in the lessons I've learned while coaching other people. Here is what I've learned...

1. Change Requires Energy

This is a biggie! You can have all of the desire in the world, but if you do not have the energy, nothing will happen. Really. One of the best places to start with a new client is with ENERGY. Make sure they have the emotional, physical and spiritual energy to make changes. They will fail, otherwise.

2. Coaching Separates The Men From The Boys

OK. So, maybe it separates the Women from the Girls? You get the drift, though.. I've seen many clients stick with coaching for over a year. I've also seen many drop out in a month or so. All I can say is that the true character of a person shines through when they are faced with the decision to CHANGE or to stay the same. The ones who move toward change are always the ones with the most ENERGY for change.

3. Sometimes, People Surprise And Shock Me

YES, it happens! Sometimes a client shows up and I could bet money they would fizzle out in the first 90 days...yet, they do not. I am surprised by the reserve of energy and determination some people have. I've learned not to judge at all and to simply let people show up and see how they do in time. Some of the ones I thought would be a dud, turn out to be the MOST amazing clients in the end. You never really know. SO, give people their space to shock you. They delightfully will.

4. I Can Easily Attract The Type Of Client I Long For....

OK, here is the trick. Do you ever wish you had a spiritual client, or an Entrepreneur, or a Millionaire or an International One? Think about the types of clients that would round out your practice... Then, INTEND for them to show up. They always do with me. I've learned you can craft your practice any way you want with intention.

5. People Love To Simply Be Heard

In the beginning, I was very eager to COACH. I was primed with my bold requests for action, homework assignments, etc. Then, I learned that sometimes all you need to do is really HEAR the client. If they are struggling, simply say" I can see you are struggling." That's it. No homework, No to-do's etc. By being HEARD, your client will kick into action without your prodding. HEARING the client gives them the impetus to move forward since they no longer feel lost or invisible.

6. Most People Know They Are Operating Way Below Their Potential

Yet, many of them think they are in the minority. They are not.

7. Helping A Client Shift From Here To There Is Where It's At

Try to simply help your client shift from being reactive to responsive...or from being a less than person to a more than person.. By helping them shift, you will make coaching FUN and create lasting change for them. Identify 5 concrete shifts you want for your client and let them know. Then, develop a project or plan and measure your success along the way. Shifting is not too tough, if you are focused on it.

8. People Crave Total Honesty

I have a hit em between the eyes knack for telling it like it is. In the coaching world, this is a commodity. People love honest messages if the coach delivers it with no judgment and in a matter of fact, kind of a way. In my opinion, this is why people hire a coach. For the TRUTH.

9. Focus Is What Most People Lack

If you can help your client focus on one to three main projects at a time, you will do an AMAZING job with them. Simply help your client stay in the moment and constantly point them to the few projects that are in front of them, one thing at a time.

10. Clients Will Teach You

This is my favorite part of the job. I find it so exciting to see what I learn each day. They all teach me about myself, human nature, relationships, etc. Be willing to learn!
