I. NEW STUDY: WORKERS HAVE NEGATIVE EMOTIONS ABOUT THEIR WORK

Towers Perrin, one of the world's largest management and human resource consulting firms, just released a survey that has people talking. The study found that workers have strong emotional connection to their work experience, but today that connection is mostly negative.

I am sure this is not news to you. You know how frustrating your career has been. You know how hard it has been to get additional resources, more money, and how tired, stressed, and overwhelmed you are.

What's interesting about the survey is that it captures what people have been thinking and saying quietly to themselves for a while. Now, for the first time, it is on paper.

Here's the good news. Your thoughts and feeling have been expressed. The bad news is you may be wondering what you can do about it. The solution? Take matters into your own hands by getting your power back. How? Stop being a victim. Realize that you have more power over your career than you think.

Instead of being afraid, be bold. Sit with a piece of paper and create a game plan to make your career better. Are you waiting for someone to assign you to a project or position you can handle? Create a plan, schedule a meeting with the person in charge, and explain what you can do and why you are the best person to do it. Have you been sending unanswered e-mail or leaving unreturned voice mail seeking a job you can do? Stop checking your inbox every hour and stop sitting by the telephone waiting for it to ring. Go down to the company and talk to a decision-maker.

A Surpass Your Dreams e-subscriber wrote to me and told me how she took action. She got tired of waiting for someone in Human Resources to call her back, so she took a trip to the company and handed them her resume in person. They were so impressed that she went out of her way to do this, that she got an interview on the spot! Most people will tell you that's not a proper thing to do, and that type of behavior would be frowned upon. It's a good thing she took action, or she still might be waiting for that interview.

It's ok to be frustrated. It's ok to be discouraged. But is this mentality serving you? Victims blame and they stay stuck. People with power take action and they move forward. Which one are you? Which one do you want to be?

So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be a life you love!

II. TOP WAYS TO SHIFT NEGATIVE EMOTIONS AT WORK INTO INSPIRATION

Change is possible. The most important aspect of change is awareness. Without it change is unattainable. Answer these awareness questions. Do you blame others? Do you resist growth because of the negative emotions you might experience? Do you give your power away? Do you have self-limiting beliefs? If you say yes to any of the above and you want to change, the following steps are for you.

1. Take Responsibility For What You Think And Do.

It is easy to be a victim in our society. The airwaves are full of them. Turn on any talk show and usually you will see more victims than you want. The bottom line is that only you can create the career you want, no one else. By taking the step of being responsible for what you think and do, you are giving yourself the power to be you.

2. Listen To The People You Trust.

If you want to find out more about yourself ask someone who will be honest with you, someone you admire. Ask them specific questions about their perceptions of you. What do they think you need to change? If you want to know the truth, ask and listen. Be willing to accept what they have to say.

3. You Can Teach An Old Dog New Tricks.

Stop living your limitations and making up excuses about things you don't want to change. Become open to learning new behaviors. Feel alive from learning new tricks. Staying with your negative emotions will only drain you.

4. Be Your Own Rescuer.

There are people in the world that just love to rescue others. The problem is that when they rescue you, they take your power along with them. By being your own rescuer, you take control of your career and your power.

5. Feel Your Negative Emotions And Don't Run Away From Them.

Negative emotions are difficult to hande. You look for a quick fix so you don't have to deal with it. Unfortunately, feeling the pain is essential so that you can let go of it. You need to find avenues of letting go. Maybe it is a physical activity where there is a lot of yelling; going into a room and closing the door and crying until another tear will not come out; sitting with someone and just talking; or writing thoughts in a journal. By feeling the pain, you then can begin to move on.

6. Release Your Negative Emotions

What you resist, persists. You may be comfortable in your victim role but you need to be aware that change is empowering. The only way to get to the other side is to walk towards it. When you walk towards growth you will always go through chaos. Unfortunately, chaos prevents us from wanting to go to the other side. Growth can be harsh at times. The key is that you cannot get to the other side without feeling chaos.

7. Start Out Small.

Change does not happen overnight. It takes one step at a time for new behavior to happen. Every day you have choices in front of you. Pick a behavior you want to change and go small. Don't tell anyone you are doing this. It is your secret. See how it goes and look at the results. Is this new behavior going to make your career better? If so, continue with that new behavior before you start another one. Soon you will be aware that your career is making a turnaround.

YOU CAN HAVE A CAREER YOU LOVE!

Do you want a career you love? If you answered YES, then working with a coach may be your next move!

If you answered YES to any of the above, then working with a career coach may be your next move. Many people who have worked with me can now say "I love what I do!"

HERE IS WHAT ONE CLIENT HAD TO SAY:

"After my business collapsed, I had no idea what I would do next. At first, I really didn't want to look at the opportunities, I just wanted to sulk. Thanks for gently prodding me to set a timeline and create a new plan. I love my new career choice. I do not know if I would have made it as quickly without you."

III. COACHES CORNER

Since many of my newsletter subscribers are coaches, this section is for you. It contains tips and techniques to take your coaching practice to the next level.

TOP REAL-LIFE COACHING DISASTERS (AND WHAT TO DO)

Do you get negative emotions about your coaching practice from time to time? We all do! Here are some disasters that other coaches have experienced that can help you get some perspective. It's nice to know that these things don't just happen to us, but others as well.

1. The Spectacular Client Loss

Early on in your practice-building you'll lose a client... spectacularly. We all have off-days; coaches and clients. Sometimes this can result in a spectacular client loss. Fear not. Learn from the experience, brush yourself off and start all over again.

2. The Bad News Call Immediately Prior To The Coaching Call

There you are, all prepared for your exciting new client, the phone rings and it's...the repair shop telling you your gubaflange is kaput and it's going to be $2,000 and eight weeks to fix. Instant shred-head.

The solution: get 'caller display' on your phone and only answer client calls for the 10 mins prior to a session.

3. Computer Cappuccino

The phone rings. You swing round to answer it and...frothy coffee all over your keyboard! This disaster is usually restricted to that moment immediately prior to a trial call or group coaching call.

Quickfix: Keep tissues on hand, consider workspace ergonomics. Do not on any account stop drinking coffee.

4. The Hitchcock Rear Window Scenario

You're all set. Nicely composed. A glance out of the window reveals a neighbor doing something wicked. Instantly, the School Prefect in you takes over.

Solution: Either, don't look out of the window/get over the fact that some people just have more fun than you/call the Police/prepare to discuss the scene with your client. After all being seen to be human is ok.

5. A Tradesperson Arrives On Your Front Doorstep

Have a pre-written signboard on hand: "I cannot speak with you I am in the middle of an important teleconference."

6. The Dead Phone

Not a good scenario, it WILL happen. Keep a spare.

7. The Partner/Friend Dump

A personal favorite. Again you're all nicely set to go and your partner or friend simply has to tell you the ghastly event that's just happened. You feel the pain. You want to help. The phone starts to ring.

Solution: Look under 'B' for boundaries. Make sure people know your schedule in advance, and ask them to respect it.

8. The Reverse Partner/Friend Dump

A personal specialty. Immediately prior to a call try being really obnoxious and cranky with your favorite partner or friend. Then go back to your office, ponder your childish actions and wait for the phone to ring.

Quickfix: Don't dump on your friends and loved ones. That's what barmen, shopkeepers, and coaches are for.

9. The Forgotten Action

What a coach! Clean desk. Notepad ready. Phone rings. Oh my God, you've not read the 2MB email your client sent you two days ago.

Solution: Come clean. Tell your client you're not prepared. Address the issue immediately and fix a time to reconvene. Try and fudge it and you'll get caught. Been there, done that (see point 1).

10. The Clumsy Overreaction

Your client misses an appointment. Hey, it's the third one this week. What do you do? Overreact of course! Nope. Not a good look. Instead, look closely at your procedures, look at the signals you're sending out and somewhere you'll find the answer to YOUR problem.
