I. CAREER TRANSITION: HOLD ON TIGHT

Careerwise, many of you are facing transition. Some of you are transitioning because you were laid off and must now find a new position. Some of you are employed, yet you are transitioning from knowing what is expected of you, to wondering where you will be tomorrow. No matter what your situation, I understand that it may be filled with tension and anxiety.

Transitions are tough because you do not know how they will end. During this time, you will begin to accept that where you were yesterday is in the past, and where you will be tomorrow is for you to create. Of course, we all wish that transition could be simple. If only we could look at the master plan, then we would know for sure that everything would be OK. Well, I've got some good news - the master plan is within you, and it is just waiting for you to implement it. The first step is to accept where you are today. Only then can you define where you want to be tomorrow.

Once you accept today, then begin planning (draw on the master plan within), and take the action necessary to implement your plan. Transition is a process; one that happens on a daily basis. Take steps forward even if you do not feel like it. Take steps forward even though you cannot foresee the outcome. Take steps forward because your steps will put the power back into your hands.

You will see a light at the end of the tunnel. Be patient. Transition is difficult, but it is only temporary. It can be the toughest time of your life, but it can also be the best thing that ever happened to you. It is up to you to decide.

So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be a life you love!

II. Top Strategies to Ride the Tide of Transition

1. Acceptance.

Some transitions are welcome and some are not. Either way, recognize that you are engaged in a transition. Acceptance invokes your personal power to successfully navigate it.

2. Imagine The Best.

Visualize in your mind the ideal outcomes of the transition (including the harmonious good of all concerned). Continue to build your personal vision. This is key to building a future that pulls you forward, versus struggling toward it.

3. Seek, And Accept, Support.

Meet with a coach, friend, or advisor, on a regular basis to keep you grounded. They can provide a safe space for you to vent, be fully heard, validate your experience, brainstorm ideas, maintain perspective, and simply be yourself.

4. Look For The Unbidden Opportunities.

In the Chinese language, two characters compose the word: crisis. One character represents danger and the other represents opportunity. Even unwanted transitions can work because they can present opportunities for you to shine, but you've got to recognize them as they come your way. well.

5. Watch Your Language.

Observe your spoken language and the self-talk in your head. Is it positive or negative? Does it express blame or creativity? Is it destructive or constructive? Is it rooted in fear or love? Positive, creative, and constructive language, spoken or thought, makes all the difference in riding the tide of transition and the results you achieve on the other side.

6. Engage Your Daily Habits.

Select and practice daily habits that support and energize you. They serve as your pillar of stability through the changing times.

7. Evolve.

You are most likely on a learning curve. Make it OK to be a beginner again. It's how you grow and transform.

8. Treat Yourself Right.

Navigating transition requires extra energy. Ensure that you take care of your body and soul more diligently than usual. Don't forget the extra treats for yourself, you deserve them all.

9. Release The Past.

Honor what has come before, learn from it, and let it go. Acknowledge the present, and give thanks for your future.

10. Be Patient.

Transitions are the stuff of the cycles of life. Trust that the process moves for your own good. Ben Sweetland said: "Success is a journey, not a destination. Be assured that it won't be your last adventure. Whenever you get there, there will be someplace else to go. Anticipate a journey to your future."

IV. COACHES CORNER

Since many of my newsletter subscribers are coaches, this section is for you. It contains tips and techniques to take your coaching practice to the next level.

COACH YOURSELF

Many coaches I work with are asking themselves a very important question: What is my target market? This question used to haunt me. Now, I understand that my target market is me.

I began my practice in 1998 as a personal coach. Great title, but not a lot of focus. Last year, I transitioned into career coaching and targeted anyone with a career issue. Great move, yet still not enough focus. Now I work with Senior Executives, Managers, and Coaches who want to transition into a new position (within or out of Corporate America), or renew their passion for their current profession. Sharper focus, happier clients.

The interesting part of my transaction is that I am now coaching myself. As a transitioned executive, I know what executives need. As a coach, I know what coaches want to grow their practice and be successful. It was all there right under my nose. Now, I can see it.

Your target market is YOU. It does not matter where you are in your personal development. There are clients out there who would love to have you share your experience and knowledge with them.

So go out there and look for more people like you! It is an important piece of a successful practice.
