I was nervous about writing this column until I saw the President's state of the union address on television. I thought that writing about the positive effects of a terrible event would be too controversial. Then I heard President Bush say the following: "None of us would ever wish the evil that was done on September 11th, yet after America was attacked, it was if our entire country looked into a mirror and saw our better selves." I felt like the President was speaking to me and telling me it was ok to write this column.
I am a better person because of what happened in September. I appreciate life like I did not before. I cherish my family, my friends, and my clients more. I take nothing for granted, and am grateful to be alive.
My work life is so much different than it was on September 10th. I had to totally change my business to survive. (Thus, I had to totally change myself.) I had to find ways to fulfill your need for career advice while respecting that you were more fearful and had less money to spend.
I have clients who once said to me they would be devastated if they lost their jobs, and now they are moving into careers they only dreamt about previously. Other clients have used this opportunity to start their own businesses, move into non-profit work, or spend less time at the office and more time at home. They tell me they have never been happier. And, these are moves they would have been too afraid to make before.
I would never take away the pain that the victims families go through each day. But I do want you to think about how this experience has left you in a more positive place. The universe works in mysterious ways. How are you a better person today?
So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be a life you love!
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE PIECE OF MIND?
Choosing whether to stay in your present career or transition into a new career is difficult because you may be unsure what to do next, or where you would begin. Plus, fear about the future can keep you from seeing your situation clearly or asking for what you deserve.
I created a 21-Day Career Empowerment Program to solve this problem. At the end of the 21 days, you will have insight, clarity, and knowledge to lead yourself to a more satisfying career. No more wondering! You will finally have direction, focus, and piece of mind.
Here's what one person who took the course said: "After being out of work for months, I decided to transfer my skills to a new position. As a result, I was offered a new job. Because of your program, I did not take the first offer that was presented to me. I knew exactly how much I wanted to earn, and was able to calmly ask for what I was worth. Not only did I get what I wanted, but I also received full medical coverage and a guaranteed bonus! (This was not part of the original offer.) I still cannot believe it. I know I would not have been as courageous if I did not take your program first." (Bridgette, Executive Assistant to the CEO, NYC)
The entire program is only $24.95. Visit career21-day.html
II. TEN OBSERVATIONS ABOUT CHANGE
1. Change is something that presses us out of our comfort zone.
It is destiny-filtered, heart-grown, faith built.
2. Change is inequitable; not a respecter of persons.
Change is for the better or for the worst, depending on where you view it.
3. Change is uncomfortable.
For changing from one state to the next upsets our control over outcomes.
4. Change has a ripping effect on those who won't let go. Flex is the key.
Even a roller coaster ride can be fun if you know when to lean and create new balance within the change.
5. Change is needed when all the familiar props and practices of the past no longer work.
6. Change is not comforted by the statement 'just hang in there' but with the statement 'you can make it.'
We don't grow in retreat, but through endurance.
7. Change isn't fixed by crying, worrying, or mental treadmilling.
Change is won by victors not victims; and that choice is ours.
8. Change is awkward -- at first.
Change is a muscle that develops to abundantly enjoy the dynamics of the life set before us.
9. Change draws out those poised for a new way.
Change isn't for chickens.
10. Change calls own strength beyond any one of us.
Change pushes you to do your personal best. Change draws out those poised for a new way.

DO YOU LOVE YOUR CAREER?
Is your career wearing you out? Are you tired of fear and excuses standing in your way? Would you move forward if you had a place to start?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then working with a coach may be your next move. Many people who have received coaching can now proudly exclaim "I love what I do!"
"The changes I've made for myself have been dramatic. During our time together, I left my nanny position of 9 years and created my own Professional Organizing Company. I was able to do this despite my fears. Deborah and I worked together to pinpoint my skills, talents, and goals and we put them together in a plan that I was comfortable implementing. She understood my hesitation in making the transition, and my fears of both success and failure. My business has a wholeness to it because of Deborah's insight, support and talents." (Kathleen Lott, Director, On Your Behalf, Inc. New York, NY)

Many people fear change because they view it as
something they have to do when they have no choice.
It is true that change is not always pleasant. Change
is a scary thing. If only there were a guarantee that
it would work out first, then taking a chance would
not seem so frightening.
But how can we help our client's change, if we also
have changes that we are too afraid to make?
What changes in your life are you avoiding? What
changes do you need to make that would start or grow
your practice? Which of these changes would transform
your life so you could, in turn, transform the lives
of your clients?
One of the best perks of being a coach is that we get
to help our clients change in ways that they never
thought possible. This is one of the reasons we
became coaches. But, we cannot effectively help our
clients change, unless we are also taking risks and
changing our lives in ways WE never thought possible.
So go ahead and change! (It's good for you.) Your
clients will thank you for it.
