I. YOU NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU ASK

When was the last time you asked your boss, co-worker, or client for what you wanted? When was the last time you spoke your mind instead of trying to figure out what was best for the other person? When was the last time you were afraid to ask, and asked anyway?

You never know what you will get in life until you ask. And, even though we may have heard this many times before, we still find ourselves not asking. Why? Because we are so afraid to hear the word "no", that we'd prefer to do nothing at all, hoping things will get better on their own. Believe it or not, our fear of being hurt and rejected prevents us from venturing out and possibly getting a "yes."

When you don't ask for what you want, you are screening people and not letting them answer their own questions. How do you know what they are going to say? Have you asked them yet? And if you have, why not ask again? Situations change, and although that person was unable to accommodate your request the first time, they may be able to accommodate your request the second time. If that doesn't work, try asking a different question, or asking a different person. You will never know until you try.

I recently switched from a full to a part-time job so I could spend more time growing my coaching practice. I had been very lucky to build a coaching practice while working full-time, but it became apparent that the next step for me was to write; first an e-book, then a print book. Unfortunately, writing required more time than I had.

Luck had it, a former boss phoned me looking for a trade shows and events person, and he asked if I knew anyone. He was looking to fill a full-time position located three hours from my home, certainly not compatible with my part-time aspirations. I could have chatted for a few moments and then said goodbye. Instead, I told him I knew the perfect candidate...ME. Same job, just less hours.

We worked out an agreement where I commute to my new job on Mondays and return on Tuesdays. I also work for them from my home on Thursdays. (For a total of 24 hours a week vs. 40+) If I had not asked, I would still be working full-time while my writing, and growing my coaching practice waited.

So what do you want? A new job? A promotion? More money? Whatever it is, ask for it. You never know; you might get it!

So what do you say? You only have one life to live so it might as well be a life you love!

II. TOP WAYS TO ASK RIGHT AND YOU MAY RECEIVE

How easily do you get what you ask for?

Here are some tips to getting what you want, whenever possible.

1. It's Ok To Ask.

This is the first and most important step. Understand that you have the right to ask. Whether it is for a promotion, an assistant, or notice if overtime is required. Always, always, ask for what you want. You deserve it!

2. Be Prepared To Hear A "Yes" Or A "No."

One effective way to ask is to be prepared to hear either a "yes" or a "no." This gives the person you are asking a choice. People like the freedom and power of being able to truly choose. Ask with this in mind, and you are more likely to hear a "yes."

3. Never Make A "No" Wrong.

If you get a "no" to your request, be gracious. Anything but will mean you were making a demand instead of a request. Demands are never well received and are always resisted. Make a "no" wrong and you are asking for more "no's." Be gracious, and you may get a "yes" in the future.

4. Have An Alternative Strategy.

You have the right to make a request and the person you are asking has the right to say "no." This means, like it or not, you need an alternative strategy. If someone says "no," you can't somehow make him or her do what you want. But you can still make sure you get what you want.

5. Assume That It Would Be A "Yes" If...

Assume the person you are asking has your best interests in mind. If you get a "no," assume the reasons for your request are not clear. Assume that if your reasons were known, your request would be granted. Make your reasons known, gently.

6. Make The Impact Known.

How would a "yes" or a "no" impact you? Does the person you are asking know the impact of a "yes" or a "no?" Get clear on the impact a "yes" or a "no" will have on you first, then communicate this to the person you are asking.

7. Say Yes To Other People's Requests.

If you want to hear "yes", so does the other person. If you say "yes" more often, you will probably hear "yes" more often in return.

8. Don't Nag.

Nagging is a way of making the same request over and over, in order to wear the person down and force what you want. Nagging may sometimes get you what you want in the short-term, but it will backfire in the long- term. If you need to repeat a request more than once, do so in the spirit of the ideas above.

9. Appreciate, Appreciate, Appreciate.

When you get a "yes," make a big deal out of it. Make the other person feel appreciated. He or she just made you happy, so do something in return. The more you appreciate, the more the other person will want to give to you. In fact, even if you do not feel appreciative, act appreciative. After a while, you will begin to feel it.

10. Cure The "I Shouldn't Have To Ask You To Do This."

Ok, how much do you resent asking someone to do something they "should have" done? Remember that he or she is not intentionally forgetting, or not doing what they said they would. He or she is not you, but a different person, with different standards and priorities. You can still get what you want. You just might have to ask with a little more patience.
