HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO EARN?

Lots of money of course! But realistically, it is much better to have a specific number in your head so you know what to shoot for. What do you need money for? A new car, apartment of your own, vacation, new clothes? How much will you need to pay your bills? Add up your projected monthly expenses and multiply that number by 12. Now add 10% for savings, and 30% for taxes. What figure did you arrive at? This is what your career should pay you.

Before I became a coach, I ran trade shows and events programs for Fortune 500 companies and dot.coms. Everyone familiar with the field said that event planners were not paid well. Meanwhile, I was getting paid more and more as I progressed in my career. How did I do it? I asked for what I wanted. And, if they said what I was asking was not in the budget, I showed them the value they would get. During interviews, potential employers not only saw my skills; they saw my passion. I always got paid what I wanted.

Note: The trends these days is to go for fulfillment rather than money. (Which I believe will make you more money in the long run.) If you are going to work for a non-profit company, figure out how much you can reasonably live on before you say yes to a job offer. It will be harder for you to live on your own if you are not making at least that amount.
